With the rising cases of electricity theft due to illegal bitcoin mining in Malaysia, the Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) just submitted a proposal to the Energy Commission. The proposal? Set a special tariff for bitcoin miners.

As silly as it sounds, TNB CEO Baharin Din actually said the Energy Commission was evaluating the proposal. During the press conference at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters, he said that this proposal is "to encourage bitcoin mining operators to apply for legal electricity supply".

On the other hand, Energy Commission COO Abdul Rahim Ibrahim told the media that electricity theft had caused a couple of supply outages fire incidents and fire incidents. To date, illegal bitcoin mining cases have risen to 7209 in 2021 from 610 cases in 2018. TNB estimated a total loss of RM2.3 billion in electricity and 18 individuals got arrested, so far.
