E3 is the Electronic Entertainment Expo where many, many games are introduced every year which takes place in Los Angeles, USA. It is arguably the largest gaming expo of the year with gamers and developers from around the globe dropping by to witness the hottest gaming gaming studios unveil their games.
This year marks a special occasion for us Malaysians as a local gaming publisher and developer has finally made it onto the E3 show floor. Todak Gaming started off an urban brand in Malaysia which sells clothes and gaming peripherals. Their website lists some pretty cool items such as caps, t-shirts, gaming chairs and more. And now, the company is working on expanding their gaming peripherals such as mice, mouse pads, keyboards as well as headsets and is developing and publishing their very own game!
Named ToGather: Island, the game is a survival game where the player has to survive on a deserted island. Players can collect materials and craft them into tools and furniture to aid them in their survival. There is also elements of combat as well as other skills such as cooking. What makes the game interesting is the day and night cycles. At night, the game turns pitch black and strong enemies come out to play so players better have their camps ready to weather through the night. To make the game more challenging, the player also has a hunger, stamina, health and thirst meter which has to be monitored. The aim of the game is to stay alive for as long as possible but there are elements of storytelling throughout the game which can be found throughout the map. A golem is also there to aid players which can be customized and levelled up according to players’ needs. It can be built into a moving home, a fighter and so much more. The game also features co-op play of up to 4 players per server (the servers are hosted by one of the players).
We can expect this game out before the end of 2019 but that’s not all from Todak Gaming right now. Ahmad Fadli bin Ahmad Dahlan or more fondly known as Todak Neo, has mentioned that the team is working on something more ambitious - Malaysia’s very own triple A title. The game may be a horror genre with rich Southeast Asian lore with mythical themes (think Nusantara). And we all know how creepy the Southeast Asian ghosts can be. What makes this even more interesting is the fact that the company is now international, which means that it is free to explore themes such as gore and violence without intervention. To ensure that the game will be true to lore and history, the company is also researching the lore in-depth.

Todak Gaming plans of having their games to be on both Steam and Epic Games store and is not looking too much into making too much of a profit or even exclusivity for their games. Right now, their goal is to get their studio and game name out before their move on to bigger things. Next year, they hope to have one of the bigger booths at E3.
Speaking of being international, the Cyberjaya based company is also currently in the midst of expanding their product line in the USA and is already testing the market. To really show off the Malaysian flavour of each peripheral, the products are named after Malaysian lore figures such as Dang Anum, Mahsuri and more.
