The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today announced that Telegram and Tencent (WeChat) have begun the licensing process required to operate in Malaysia. So, what should you know about it?
According to MCMC, both platforms are expected to meet the necessary requirements to operate in Malaysia in the near future. As previously announced, social media and Internet messaging platforms with a minimum of 8 million users are required to have an Application Service Provision Class Licence under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, effective 1 January 2025.

In addition, these licensing requirements aim to improve online security, protect consumers and strengthen regulation over Internet messaging and social media service providers. Returning to context, MCMC also reminds all service providers who meet the licensing requirements to submit applications immediately, before the deadline of 31 December 2024.
