The electricity consumption will increase dramatically during these 14 days due to the movement control restriction. This will cause a massive increase in electricity bills that burdens on the people. Tenaga Nasional Berhad(TNB) foresees this issue and announced a six-month discount on electricity bills from 1 April to September 2020.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah mentioned a 2% deduction will be given to the people and a 15% deduction will be given to 6 selected business sectors under the Trade Tariff category. The 10,000 accounts in the 6 business sectors eligible for the bill cuts will include hotel operators, travel and tourism agencies, convention centers, theme parks, local airline offices, and shopping complexes.
He also mentioned the domestic or residential category users would enjoy a 2% discount on the electricity bill from 1 April to September 2020. This will add up to be a total of 8% discount for the electric consumption for the domestic users as the current 6% discount is still effective until 30 June 2020. This electricity bill discount is part of the government's announced Economic Stimulus Package to reduce the impact caused by the Covid-19 outbreak.
