Today, Tencent officially opened its new office in Kuala Lumpur. Speaking at the launch, the Digital Minister YB Gobind Singh Deo highlighted that the event comes at a pivotal moment for Malaysia’s digital economy. Over the past two years, the government has taken deliberate action to enhance national capabilities across data infrastructure, AI governance, cybersecurity, digital identity, payments, and creative content development.

Driving Malaysia Madani and RMK-13 Digital Ambitions

According to the minister, Malaysia is building an economy fuelled by innovation and supported by world-class infrastructure, strong talent pipelines, and an ecosystem designed to attract high-value investments. These efforts are aligned with the country’s long-term vision under Malaysia Madani and the 13th Malaysia Plan. He emphasised that the global race for technology, talent, and investments is accelerating, and Malaysia fully intends to compete.

Elevating Malaysia as a Regional Talent and Investment Destination

During engagements with industry players, the minister reiterated that Malaysia possesses the key building blocks to advance its digital agenda. The priority now is to ensure the ecosystem remains attractive to global technology companies.

A major focus is talent development. Upcoming initiatives include strengthening university–industry pathways, expanding TVET specialisations, and providing targeted programmes in AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, gaming, and creative content. The goal: to position Malaysia not just as a consumer of digital talent, but as a global producer of it.

Tencent Expands Deep Commitment to Malaysia

Tencent’s new office will house a 500-strong team, marking one of the company’s most significant expansions in Southeast Asia. The minister described Tencent as a “trusted partner” that has contributed to Malaysia’s growth for over a decade.

This expansion is expected to create new high-value job opportunities for Malaysians, further strengthening the local digital workforce. Tencent is also actively recruiting and collaborating with Malaysian educational institutions to streamline access to local talent.

Boosting Tourism, Esports, Creative Industries & Digital Services

Besides being known for publishing mobile games such as PUBG Mobile, the company also has other platforms, from digital content to cloud services and payments. The minister also confirmed several upcoming collaborations:

  • Tencent will support Visit Malaysia 2026 to help draw more international visitors.
  • Tencent will champion Malaysian cultural showcases at major esports events, including the SEA Games 2024 closing ceremony.
  • Tencent aims to support Malaysia’s hosting of the 2027 SEA Games, particularly in esports development and healthy gaming initiatives.

A Milestone for Malaysia’s AI Nation Vision 2030

The minister emphasised that long-term digital investments — like Tencent’s — reflect strong confidence in Malaysia’s digital policy direction. They are also essential to Malaysia’s goal of becoming an AI-driven nation by 2030. He concluded by congratulating Tencent and reaffirming that the success of Malaysia’s digital transformation depends on strong public-private collaboration.
