The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has announced that it will be reviewing the previously set target of having 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the country by 2025. Its Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz clarified that while the government is maintaining the target as of now, his Cabinet colleagues will re-examine whether it is actually achievable.

According to Bernama, Tengku Zafrul said that currently, there are almost 1,500 EV charging stations in operation, which is a far cry from the target, with over 8,500 more needed to be built in less than 2 years for the target to be achieved. The 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025 target was first outlined under the Low Carbon Mobility Development Plan 2021-2030.

The MITI Minister added that the target is quite aggressive because there are many issues that are yet to be addressed. Furthermore, it involves many processes and agencies such as the approval process and agencies such as the Energy Commission, local authorities, and other parties.

He further explained that the charging station preparation procedures need to be streamlined because there were complaints from companies providing EV charging stations. These include the approval period for setting up a charging station taking a long time.
