Tesla, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, officially entered the Malaysian market in 2023, promising to develop car sales and service centres as well as EV chargers across the country. Recently, there have been rumours about a Tesla factory opening in Malaysia. So, what should you know about it?
For your information, there are discussions about building a Tesla vehicle manufacturing plant in Malaysia, but this has yet to yield any results. Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz recently said that discussions on this matter are ongoing.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, Tengku Zafrul said that the initial agreement between the Malaysian government and Tesla to open a company in Malaysia, and officially start selling electric vehicles in the local market.
Whether the company develops an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in the country depends on the country's commercial viability. Before Malaysia, Tesla had also been in talks with Indonesia to open a vehicle manufacturing plant, but the project ultimately fell through.
Currently, Tesla only has a factory in China, from which vehicles manufactured in that country are imported to other Asian countries. One of Tesla's promises to Malaysia is the development of 50 Supercharger fast chargers (180kW) where 30 per cent of the total chargers can be accessed by other EV vehicles.
