Teo Nie Ching: Govt to create a platform for Malaysians to challenge the removal of their social media content

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has revealed that the Government is planning to create a platform for users to file complaints challenging the removal of content on social media. She added that this platform would be established under the Online Safety Bill 2024.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, Bernama quoted Teo as saying that the platform would also enable social media users to provide reasonable justifications to defend their content from being taken down. Moreover, anyone whose content has been removed can file a complaint with the tribunal to defend why their post should not have been taken down.

Hence, the proposed Online Safety Act will ensure the existence of a check-and-balance with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as not everything will fall under the commission’s authority. Moreover, this allows for every MCMC decision on the removal of content can be challenged.
