Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has revealed that 63,652 pieces of fraudulent online content on social media were taken down by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) last year. She added that this was a significant increase compared to 2023.
Bernama quoted Teo as saying that in 2023, MCMC only removed 6,297 fraudulent content. Among the identified frauds included those involving artificial intelligence (AI) such as deepfakes, and impersonation of notable figures, videos, graphics and text.
The Deputy Communications Minister said that AI technology now makes it easy to create deepfake videos and that many prominent figures have become victims. These include Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
