According to The Information, Apple is planning to introduce camera upgrades for the iPhone 17, which will be launched next year. This is good news for photography enthusiasts. The report indicates that at least one model of the iPhone 17 series will have a variable aperture function, allowing users to adjust the aperture like using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, thereby controlling image blur.

For your information, Aperture refers to the small hole through which light passes through the camera sensor. Professional cameras allow the photographer to adjust the aperture size as needed. Aperture plays an important role in photography. It determines how much light can pass through the sensor during exposure. Changing the aperture will increase or decrease the amount of light reaching the sensor. In the past, smartphones only used fixed apertures. Taking the iPhone 15 Pro launched last year as an example, the main camera and telephoto lens use an f/1.78 aperture, while the ultra-wide-angle lens uses an f/2.2 aperture.

In addition, the high-end models of the recently launched Xiaomi 14 series, HUAWEI Pura70 series and Honor Magic 6 series all provide variable aperture functions. For example, the Xiaomi 14 Plus has a variable aperture from f/1.42 to f/4.0. Adjustable aperture can affect the depth of field of the image.

Moreover, the Bokeh effect is often used in portrait photography, which is achieved by adjusting the aperture. At present, the iPhone cleverly simulates the portrait bokeh effect through software calculation. Some foreign media estimate that Apple will first add variable aperture to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, and then further distribute it to all models in the future.
