In anticipation of Malaysia's Merdeka Day Celebration on 31 August 2022, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Malaysia has announced that all flying drones are prohibited for the occasion on its social media page. The public is not advised to fly their drones without approval and for safety purposes.

Since the Royal Malaysian Air Force will be performing low-formation flights in the area, the CAA said it's best to avoid any unwanted incident that may involve the safety of the public. We also advised the public not to even try applying for CAA's approval at all to lower the risk of accidents.

The CAA would also like to remind you that all drone activities in Malaysia are subject to Section 4 of the Civil Aviation Act 1969 (Act 3), Regulation 98, 140-144, Malaysian Civil Aviation Regulations (MCAR 2016) and Civil Aviation Directives (CADs). Penalties for offences according to the rules currently in force are as follows:

a) Section 4 of Act 3: Fined not exceeding five hundred thousand ringgit or imprisoned for a period not exceeding five years or both.
b) Rule 206(3) MCAR 2016:
i- If the person is an individual, fined not exceeding fifty thousand ringgit or imprisoned for a period not exceeding three years or both; or
ii- If the person is a corporation, fined not exceeding one hundred thousand ringgit.
