Today, the Facebook Company (formerly) will be now known as Meta. This was officially announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Connect 2021 and no, the Facebook social media platform won't change its name. From Facebook's newsroom, the Meta name change is a new direction that brings the company's apps and technologies under one new brand.

In case you missed it, Zuckerberg introduced the Metaverse just last month and it has been brought to fruition. According to the CEO, the focus of Meta is to "bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities and grow business". That said, the company plans to go to the next level of three-dimension (3D) experience.

In Zuckerberg's vision, the Metaverse's purpose is to "share immersive experiences with other people even when you can't be together". In other words, it's very much like Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality which the Connect 2021 event explored a few hours ago. This includes social platforms, entertainment, gaming, fitness, work, education and commerce.

Despite the name change, Meta's corporate structure isn't changing but the financial report will. The company will report on two operating segments which are Family of Apps and Reality Labs.
