The PS6 could be 3 times better than the PS5 - Price could start from RM2300

Sony’s next-generation console, the PlayStation 6, may launch at around USD499 (approximately RM2300)—matching the original PS5's starting price.

Based on recent leaks, the PS6 could deliver up to three times the performance of the PS5 while maintaining the same retail price.

What happened

Rumours suggest that the PlayStation 6 is targeting a release window between late 2027 and early 2028. If the pricing remains consistent with the PS5, gamers in Malaysia and other regions might gain access to significantly upgraded hardware without a higher price tag.

The leak points to major performance improvements thanks to newer AMD architecture and memory technologies.

What we could expect

The details reportedly stem from internal AMD documents and a technical presentation allegedly shared in 2023. The PS6, believed to be codenamed Orion, is said to feature an AMD APU with eight Zen 6 CPU cores and 40 to 48 RDNA 5 compute units running at approximately 3?GHz.

The system may draw up to 160 watts of total board power, and early estimates suggest a threefold increase in rasterisation performance compared to the PS5.

The performance gains are largely attributed to architectural improvements and the potential use of GDDR7 memory.

Support for backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games is expected, preserving access to existing PlayStation game libraries. In addition, the PS6 might use a chiplet-based design and feature a memory bus width of 160 to 192 bits, with bandwidth speeds around 32 GT/s, enhancing both general performance and ray tracing capabilities.

Alongside the PS6, Sony is also believed to be developing a portable gaming device. This handheld, possibly codenamed Canis or Robin Plus, may include a low-power chip with four Zen 6c CPU cores and 12 to 20 RDNA 5 compute units, optimised for energy efficiency.

With a 15-watt power envelope, the device could deliver about half the rasterisation performance of the PS5, while still supporting modern features like ray tracing.

The portable system is also rumoured to include a touchscreen, USB-C video output, haptic feedback, dual microphones, and support for microSD or M.2 SSD storage.

Moreover, backwards compatibility is also expected for this device, which may target both remote and local play.
