According to BERNAMA and Astro Awani, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) successfully detected and seized 72 server units containing advanced AI chips with an estimated value of around RM52.9 million, before they were re-exported to an unspecified Asian country. This shows that the AI chips were not for use here, but rather, Malaysia was only used as a temporary stopover.
Consequences for those involved
AI chips are not ordinary goods but are instead categorised as strategic goods under the Strategic Trade Act 2010. Such goods cannot be exported at will, and their shipment must first receive official approval. The company that brought in the AI chips and servers was then held and investigated according to Section 12 of the act.
Personally, we feel this is very alarming news for everyone in Malaysia. Hopefully, the authorities will tighten its security measures when dealing with imported or exported goods nationwide.
