Recently, the UK government has asked Apple and Google to put in place a system to block the display of pornographic images from being viewed by minors at the operating system (OS) level. So, what should you know about it?

This ban will be active at all times

For your information, the UK Home Office wants an OS that blocks pornographic images from being displayed unless the user confirms that they are an adult through a biometric authentication system or official ID card. On the devices of child sex offenders, this restriction will be enabled at all times, even if they are adults.

Additionally, this barrier system needs to be supported on mobile devices before being expanded to desktop devices. This year, the UK has already made it mandatory for individuals to verify their age before accessing adult sites.

As a result, VPN usage has increased in the UK, with traffic to certain adult sites plummeting by up to 77% after this age verification system was enforced. While Apple and Google don't have any OS-level pornographic content filters, they do have security systems in their messaging apps. Apple's "Communication Safety " and Google's "Family Link" settings.

As of now, both systems simply blur out pornographic images received through Messages, AirDrop, and FaceTime. There are no further details on the news currently. So, we should wait for more announcements from the authorities.
