The popular YouTube Go app will be discontinued in August 2022 as the Google-owned company no longer sees its necessity anymore. Launched in 2016, YouTube Go is a lightweight version of the YouTube app designed for places with poor data infrastructure or expensive connectivity.

In case you're not familiar with the app, it essentially allows for users to down YouTube videos, adjust data usage to control video quality and preview videos before watching. It has recorded over 500 million video downloads overt he past six years.

Announced in a blog post by YouTube, the company said that the Go app was released because previously, connectivity, data prices and low-end devices prevented them from delivering the best experience in the main app. However, thanks to YouTube’s investment in improvements, the main YouTube app can now perform better in the mentioned environments.

In the same statement, YouTube also announced that they’re currently building additional user controls that will help to decrease mobile data usage for viewers with limited data. With the main YouTube app, Go users will have the full experience as intended by the company, including creation and community, which are not available on the Go app.
