The government demands an explanation from Google regarding the inaccurate Ringgit-USD exchange rate

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government would request an explanation from Google regarding the issue of the incorrect exchange rate between the United States Dollar (USD) and the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR).

Recently, there was a screenshot that went viral on social media, showing Google search results that said 1 USD had already reached RM4.98. The government explained that the information was inaccurate and there was an error (glitch) on Google's part.

In addition, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) also stated that the actual exchange rate between USD and MYR is around MYR4.7975 for USD1. Fahmi also said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Governor (BNM) Datuk Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour had contacted Google to deal with the issue. Since Google is a reference often used by the public, displaying inaccurate data like that will annoy Malaysians.

While the government is trying to drive the regrowth of the country's economy with the confidence shown to investors, this should be kept from happening or repeating itself. Previously, a similar error was also displayed by Google on February 6, 2024.
