If you own an Apple iPhone, this news might surprise you. Reportedly, the iOS 17.4 update might let you sideload apps. So, what should you know about it?

For your information, this feature might be available in the EU (European Union) only. This could be part of Apple’s plan to modify the system in the EU following the requirements of DMA (Digital Market Acts). It is reported that there are three major changes in iOS 17.4 sideloading.

First, Apple allows users to download applications from third-party app stores. Second, third-party browsers can use web engines other than Apple WebKit on the iPhone. Third, third-party wallet applications can access the iPhone’s NFC chip enabling contactless mobile payments.

Eventhough Apple allows sideloading, the Cupertino company reminds everyone that the sideloading function will bring new risks to users and their devices. Apple cannot eliminate these risks and can only reduce risks to a limited extent.

It is worth noting that Apple has strict restrictions on the sideloading function. That makes it difficult for non-EU users to experience the sideloading function. Developers discovered through iOS code that Apple will check the user's Apple ID billing address, the user's current location (for privacy reasons, Apple will only obtain the user's country or region rather than precise location information), iOS settings, the current region, device model, and so forth.

We have yet to confirm if this update will be available in Malaysia. As of now, we have no information for the Malaysia release date of this update. So, you might have to wait for it.
