The under-screen camera is probably one of the features that we would very much like to see on new smartphones. Not only it will bring something new and exciting to the smartphone industry, but the technology will also end the era of the notches. Today, an approved design patent from Xiaomi has leaked and pretty much shows us how the company will be making a smartphone with an under-screen camera.

According to the patent discovered by LetsGoDigital, the device doesn't have a curved screen like the one from Xiaomi Mi 10. Instead, it will adopt a flat display. As for the camera, the patent suggests that it will probably be on the top left or in the middle. For functionality, it is mentioned that the area housing the camera will be transparent when taking pictures, and will go back to normal while it's not in use to allow full-screen experience.

Despite the patent being leaked, it doesn't mean that the smartphone will be launched soon. Not long ago, Redmi's general manager, Lu WeiBing, said that under-screen camera technology is not ready for commercialization yet. He also mentioned that the current smartphones' displays will block the light from entering the camera and affects image quality, hence increasing the difficulty to achieve the technology.
