The Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) has reported that the country now has more electric vehicles (EVs) on the road than petrol cars. This is a rather interesting data. That said, what should you know about it?
"For the first time in Norwegian automotive history, there are now more electric cars than pure petrol cars in passenger cars"
Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, director of the Norwegian Traffic Information Council OFV.no, stated that Norway is now making rapid strides towards becoming the first country in the world with a fleet of passenger cars dominated by electric cars.
In fact, he expects that at the current rate, the same development may also happen for diesel cars by 2026. According to the report, in the past 20 years, more than one million petrol cars have disappeared from Norwegian roads, with the majority being replaced by EVs.
Here is an overview of OFV data showing 2,872,652 vehicles in Norway listed by fuel type, with unit count and parts currently on the road:
Diesel: 999,715 – 34.80%
Electricity: 754,303 – 26.26%
Petrol: 753,905 – 26.24%
Petrol Plug-in Hibrid: 198,707 – 6.92%
Hybrid Petrol: 155,307 – 5.41%
Hibrid Plug-in Diesel: 9,478 – 0.33%
Hibrid Diesel: 896 - 0.03%
LPG: 173 – 0.01%
Hydrogen: 167 – 0.01%
We have yet to confirm other details on the news. However, it will be interesting to see if this trend translates well in Malaysia. Our guess? A solid no.
