The popular Gen-AI song, Cinta Tersimpul Rapi, managed to top the iTunes chart in Malaysia recently. Today, the song was removed from all digital music platforms. That said, what should you know about it?
It is a cover for a song from 30 years ago
For your information, the song was originally sung by Anis Suraya almost 30 years ago. Now, it is unavailable for purchase on Apple’s platform. Interestingly, the video on YouTube was deleted with a message indicating that copyright had been claimed by Suria Records (SRC). The original writer of the song Cinta Tersimpul Rapi is Azmeer, and the lyrics are by Lukhman S.
Moreover, more than 40 AI-generated cover songs on the Jane in Heaven channel have also been deleted. Among the songs by artists that were covered using AI are those sung by M Nasir, Aishah, Search, and Sudirman. Only nine original Jane in Heaven songs remained on the channel a while ago.
This is where the line must be drawn
On top of that, the Music Authors Copyright Protection (MACP) has issued a statement saying that copyright protection is a right reserved for real humans only. It also stressed that creative works must come from the life experiences, labor and skills of human songwriters and not be produced by code.
Furthermore, this stance ensures that while AI can imitate voices or melodies, it cannot claim the legal rights or financial rewards of creators. These MACP guidelines are in line with the views of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which also states that any AI-generated work cannot be owned by anyone, even the human who entered the promo, because copyright can only be granted to humans.
