Italian newspaper, Il Foglio, made history as the first in the world to publish an edition written entirely by artificial intelligence (AI) for a month. So, what should you know about it?
For your information, the move is not to replace journalists but as an experiment to understand the limits and potential of AI in the world of journalism, said its director, Claudio Cerasa. Everyday, the newspaper publishes a four-page AI edition with around 22 articles and three editorials in addition to the regular edition. Il Foglio journalists use a version of ChatGPT to write articles with a specific tone based on information on the internet.
According to Cerasa, this experiment aims to test how AI can be used alongside traditional journalism. Journalists are still needed to ensure the creativity and unique relationships in writing that AI is not yet able to fully replicate. In its first few days, Il Foglio found that AI could produce articles that rivalled human writing, but it still had limitations. Cerasa believes that such innovations should be embraced and regulated to improve efficiency in the news industry, not to replace journalists.
Reader reactions were mostly positive, with 90% feeling entertained and the rest worried that AI would take over the role of journalists. However, the experiment attracted more readers, even increasing newspaper sales by 60% on the first day. Although AI has demonstrated extraordinary capabilities, Cerasa insists that human writing is still superior because it has creativity, unique perspectives, and a power of connection that machines cannot produce.
