A costume designer and builder Thomas DePetrillo has created a giant 'cosplay', a replica of the original RX-78-2 Gundam. Designed by pioneering mecha designer Kunio Okawara, the iconic prototype was first introduced in the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam anime series. So, what should you know about it?
Standing at 3.12 m (10 ft 3 in), it has been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's tallest Gundam cosplay. This giant version of the Gundam took Thomas and his team at Extreme Costumes 3 to 4 months to build, and they experimented with different design scales until they found the best balance of size and mobility.
After that, they created special double joints for the elbows and knees so that Thomas could easily control the suit while wearing it. Thomas stated that this was not only their biggest invention, but also their most accurate. This is not his first cosplay. Thomas DePetrillo previously set his first record for the highest mobile superhero cosplay costume at New York Comic Con in 2015 with his Iron Man Hulkbuster.
In addition, he also broke records in 2017 for the highest mobile cosplay costume based on a video game ( Overwatch's Reinhardt tank) and the highest mobile cosplay costume of Camaro, Bumblebee from the Transformers franchise). He has also created several Gundam cosplays for Bandai, Transformers for Hasbro and Zords for Power Rangers.
