A recent report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) reveals the profound impact of generative AI on society, both professionally and personally. Interestingly, the report says AI could take over most jobs on the market. So, what should you know about it?

For your information, Carsten Jung, head of AI at IPPR, said that AI advancements are progressing rapidly, and the launch of AI agents shows that AI is not just a tool, but an actor that can have a major impact on the economy and society. AI will transform employment sectors where it will eliminate old jobs by creating new ones, as well as drive innovation in products and services.

In addition, the report warns that simply accelerating the adoption of AI without a clear direction could have unintended consequences. As a result, the report emphasises that AI should be used to solve grand challenges such as healthcare. Among the key findings in the report are:

  • AI is transforming the workplace, especially in knowledge-based sectors of the economy such as project management, marketing, and administration.
  • IPPR's analysis of 22,000 work tasks found that up to 70% of tasks could be changed or replaced by AI.
AI is having a major impact on organisational, strategic, and analytical tasks, raising questions about the future of work.
  • 930,000 UK citizens have used AI as digital companions on apps such as Character.AI and Replika, including in romantic relationships. While providing emotional support, the risks of addiction and long-term psychological effects are still unknown, especially for young people.

IPPR in its report criticised current AI policies that only focus on safety and technological development but ignore clear direction and goals. They propose a "new AI politics" approach, in which governments, businesses, and society work together to define AI targets for the public good. The IPPR proposal is as follows:

  • Establish clear foundations, including excise and AI regulations.
  • Develop measurable goals with funding mechanisms and timelines.
  • Collaborate with the private sector and society to govern the development of AI.
  • Establish strict monitoring to ensure AI is aligned with the public interest.

Carsten Jung stated that, due to the great potential of AI, AI needs to be directed towards solving major social problems.

"The public should be involved in determining the direction of AI because its potential in solving global challenges is enormous."

Although the study was conducted in the UK, AI, which is rapidly developing around the world, provides insight into its impact on the employment sector globally. The upcoming Paris AI Action Summit is seen as an opportunity for policymakers to shift focus to mission-based uses of AI, such as improving healthcare, climate change, and education.
