A software developer in the United States faces up to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of activating malicious code that caused computer systems at his former workplace to malfunction shortly after he was fired. So, what should you know about it?

For your information, Davis Lu was fired in 2019 by Eaton Corp., based in Ohio, USA. Immediately after being fired, Eaton Corp.'s computer system failed to operate, employee files were suddenly deleted, the system refused to allow logins, and programs that performed repetitive tasks endlessly suddenly appeared.

When the company's software code was examined, there was a line of code that instructed that if Davis Lu was fired, various dormant system issues would be automatically activated. On the returned laptop, there was a history of web searches by him looking for ways to hide malicious processes and delete files from the system.

All of this was done as an act of revenge to destroy Eaton Corp's reputation in the eyes of customers. Although found guilty in court, Davis Lu will appeal and still deny wrongdoing. Davis Lu's case is similar to the case involving Kandula Nagaraju in Singapore, who deleted his former employer's computer browser after being fired. His actions caused losses of around RM 3.2 million, and he was sentenced to 32 months in prison.
