Threads has rolled out a new feature allowing users to share images directly in direct messages (DMs), further expanding the platform’s messaging capabilities.
Launched on 17 July 2025, this update enhances private conversations by enabling photo sharing without needing to switch to Instagram.
The update is available globally at no additional cost, except in selected regions such as Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
This marks the first major addition to Threads’ standalone messaging inbox, which was introduced earlier in July. Users can now tap the plus icon in the bottom-left corner of a DM, choose “Media” to select a photo from their gallery, or tap “Camera” to take and send a photo on the spot.
Expanding messaging features
With the introduction of image sharing, Threads continues its push to become a more independent communication platform under Meta. Previously reliant on Instagram's backend for messaging, Threads now offers a native inbox experience.
The new photo-sharing feature aligns with broader user trends that increasingly favor private interactions over public posts. Users aged 18 and above can access the new DM tools, which currently support one-to-one conversations.
The current feature set also includes emoji reactions, spam reporting, and mute options. Group chats and inbox filtering are not yet available but are expected in future updates.
This change reflects Meta’s ongoing strategy to shift social engagement toward private messaging. The move also mirrors functions seen on competing platforms like WhatsApp and X, positioning Threads as a more complete alternative for everyday communication.
How to share images in Threads DMs
To share an image in a Threads DM:
- Open a conversation or start a new one.
- Tap the plus icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Select Media to choose an image from your device, or Camera to take and send one instantly.
Why this matters for Malaysia
For users in Malaysia, the new image sharing feature simplifies how photos are shared during private chats, whether for casual conversation, creative feedback, or business communication.
It removes the need to switch between Threads and Instagram, streamlining daily interactions. This could benefit local content creators, online sellers, and influencers who frequently use social media to communicate and collaborate.
Meta has not announced any pricing for future features, and the current rollout does not include any monetized tools. However, more updates—including group messaging and expanded message controls—are expected in upcoming releases.
