TikTok, the world’s most popular app has been expanding its services to be more than just a social video platform, including entering e-commerce with TikTok Shop. Now, it looks like the app is also planning to enter the food delivery market as Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok is currently testing the service in China.

As reported by SCMP, ByteDance, the owners of TikTok and Douyin is reportedly ‘trying to open delivery options’ for group-purchased goods fro some businesses with urgent needs. Furthermore, Douyin itself has confirmed the project, saying that it is ‘still under exploration’.

However, despite ByteDance being China’s largest unicorn and has within its arsenal the most popular app in the world, breaking into the food delivery market in China could prove to be a challenge too big. This is because the market is being dominated by Meituan and Alibaba’s Ele.me, both of which have delivery riders in almost all cities in China.

Furthermore, Douyin’s food delivery service testing doesn’t even involve its own riders, whereby the app is only providing a platform for restaurant owners to allow users order food with delivery being handled by the restaurants themselves.

However, we’re not writing off ByteDance just yet as if there’s one company that can do it, it probably will be the unicorn. Besides, the company can always introduce food delivery services in other regions where TikTok has a significant presence, which these days are practically almost everywhere.
