Following the ban-or-divest law passed in the US last year, TikTok has gone dark today, with users blocked from viewing videos in the country. Furthermore, the TikTok app has also been removed from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
According to The Verge, the shutdown affects 170 million people who use TikTok in the US, making it one of the country's longest-running outages. Moreover, despite the outgoing Biden administration passing the enforcement responsibility of the aforementioned law to the incoming Trump administration, TikTok took the bold step of going dark in the US without clear assurances.
For context, Donald Trump will take office tomorrow (20 January), hence TikTok made the move just 1 day before he officially started duties as the 47th US President. However, TikTok assured its employees in the US via an eternal memo, saying that Trump had indicated that he would work with the company on a solution to reinstate TikTok.
