TikTok has announced that it will be implementing a couple of new measures to help keep its community safe. These include the introduction of a new “adult audience” option in live streams as well as limiting live streams only to creators above 18 years old.
In a press release yesterday (17 October 2022), TikTok elaborated that it is constantly working to evolve the safeguards put in place to protect its users and creators, as well as support their well-being. Hence, starting from 23 November 2022, the minimum age to host a live stream on the platform has been increased from 16 to 18 years old.
TikTok further clarified that this decision was made after considering the breadth of its global audience. Moreover, the approach is consistent with other features that have an age restriction for access, including having to be 16 years old and above to access Direct Messaging and being 18 years old and above to send virtual gifts or access monetisation features.
As for the new adult audience option for live streams, TikTok said that this new feature will be implemented in “the coming weeks” and allows for creators to choose whether to limit their audience to those above 18 years old. For example, TikTok said that maybe the live stream consists of a comedy routine that is better suited to those above 18 years old or if creators want to talk about a difficult life experience that they would feel more comfortable knowing the conversation is limited to adults.
