Tivoli Audio Model One Digital Gen 2 review - A hybrid of classic aesthetics and modern functionality

Tivoli Audio might be a newcomer in Malaysia. However, the company has already developed a reputation for blending high-quality audio performance with stylish design, and the Model One Digital Gen 2 WiFi Radio continues this tradition. According to the company, this device aims to offer a modern twist on the classic radio experience by integrating contemporary technology while maintaining the vintage aesthetic that Tivoli is known for.

That said, we had the Wi-Fi radio for around 2 weeks. For a price of RM1999, is this device worth the splurge? This is what we think about it.

The design looks clean and premium

It's also pretty easy to setup

For your information, the Model One Digital Gen 2 features a sleek, minimalist design that is both elegant and functional. So, that's a plus in our books. It comes in various finishes, including walnut, white, and black, which can easily complement any home decor. For this review, we received the white variant. Build-wise, it's quite solid and feels durable. So, that's a plus in our books.

In addition, we feel the audio performance is quite good for its size. It delivers clear and well-balanced audio that can fill a room. The built-in speaker provides a good bass response, making it suitable for a wide range of music genres. While the sound quality is clear, we personally feel the audio display is quite average. If you listen closely, you might hear minor distortions or buzz. But, that shouldn't affect your listening experience.

The power button and volume dial rolled into one

The design is quite minimalistic

As you can expect, the WiFi connectivity allows for a seamless integration with various streaming services. That includes Spotify, Deezer, and Tidal. It also supports Bluetooth and FM radio, providing multiple ways to enjoy your favourite tunes. The Model One Digital Gen 2 features an intuitive interface with a colour display that is easy to navigate. The rotary dial is responsive and adds a tactile element to the user experience, reminiscent of classic radios. That's a neat touch.

Like other digital radios, it also comes with a companion app. The Tivoli's companion app enhances the functionality of the radio, allowing users to control it remotely. This app is available on both iOS and Android, offering convenience and additional features such as preset stations and equalizer settings. However, the Tivoli Audio ART app only supports Gen 1 devices. For this device, we had to install Google Home to use it. Regardless, the installation process is pretty straightforward and it will only take you a few minutes.

The default app does not support this device, but that's not a problem for the Google Home app

It's pretty easy to setup

Thanks to its size, this radio is ideal for various spaces, whether it's on a kitchen counter, bedside table, or office desk. Despite its small size, it doesn't compromise on sound quality or functionality. However, it's interesting to note this device lacks an AM radio feature. The battery life also feels underwhelming for a device in this price range. So, you might want to consider these limitations before buying.

For RM799, we feel there are other better devices in this price range. Regardless, it's still good value for money and makes for a good addition in your household. Our verdict? Pass.
