Not sure about you, but the radio frequency identification (RFID) tolls can be a nightmare to some of us who have gotten stuck before. However, things might get better soon as new RFID tolls along the Hutan Kampung route to Sungai Dua come equipped with a technology that enables a smoother RFID experience, compared to the previous version.

PLUS Malaysia announced that the RFID toll fare collection system now works with an automated number plate recognition (ANPR) system. With it, customers can safely and seamlessly pass through the RFID-equipped toll lane without interruption at speeds of up to 30 km/h, compared to speeds of up to 20 km/h when using SmartTag.

The integration consists of an ANPR with a toll validation centre (TVC) uses artificial intelligence and machine learning. There will also be high-resolution cameras set up at entry and exit lanes to enable smooth passage for RFID customers, said PLUS. The integrated systems will be able to detect, analyse and resolve most common RFID customer issues automatically in the background without interrupting the customer's journey experience in the lane, according to PLUS MD Datuk Azman Ismail.
