During the weekend, President Trump made a U-Turn on his tariffs. As for now, the tariffs for electronics such as smartphones, computers, chips and other tech devices and components are exempted. However, an admin working for Trump said it's only temporary.
According to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, he told ABC News, "This is not like a permanent sort of exemption". The electronics that we mentioned earlier, such as phones, laptops and others are going to be tariffed "in a month or two". He also added that all these electronics will be subjected to a "special focus type of tariff" applied to the semiconductor industry.
As sources noted, the special type of tariff could be similar to the automotive tariffs that were imposed by Trump in early April 2025. He is taxing 25% of imported vehicles for the sake of encouraging Americans to buy locally-made American vehicles. Industry analysts think this will backfire as it will raise the price by $5K to $10K due to the supply chain from all over the world.
By the way, the heavy tariff on China is also exempted from the tariff for now. And for some strange reason, the Nintendo Switch 2, video game consoles and other machines are considered "toys" by the US Customs and Border Protection instead of electronics. So there is a good chance that the Switch 2's price will be affected.
