Twitter is starting to remove blue ticks from accounts who refuse to pay

As of 1 April 2023, Twitter stayed true to its word on removing verification badges from official accounts. This applies to accounts that already have the blue tick but only if they don't pay for it.

It seems that many organisations and public figures are not going to pay for the blue tick. This includes The New York Times, CNN, the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post, as well as Lebron James and rapper Ice T. Since Elon Musk's announcement on the blue tick subscription fee, it has gained a lot of criticism and invited trolls to make fake accounts with the ticks.

In case you didn't know, there are three different coloured verification badges on Twitter now. Business organisations are using gold ticks, government-affiliated or multilateral organisations have the grey ticks and last but not least, individual accounts are still using blue ticks. That said, organisations have to pay a monthly fee of $1000 (~RM4423) just for the gold tick, whereas the blue tick is $8 or RM35 per month.

Accounts who have yet to pay for the verification will have their badges removed gradually. It's going to take some time as Twitter has a large amount of those and we might lose ours too (psst, bossku, did we pay for the verification?). Anyway, stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
