Recently, all third-party Twitter clients such as Tweetbot and Twitterific suddenly became unusable with the social media platform believed to have blocked its API access to these apps. Now, Twitter itself has confirmed the matter via new rules on its Developer Agreement page.

The new rules, which were updated yesterday (19 January 2023) state that you can’t use Twitter’s API or content to “create or attempt to create a substitute or similar service or product to the Twitter Applications”. Moreover, Twitter clarified that “Twitter Applications” refers to the platform’s “consumer-facing products, services, applications, websites, web pages, platforms and other offerings,”.

Essentially, the new rules ban alternative services that are similar to the Twitter mobile applications and website. This latest rule is yet another change introduced by the company since the takeover by Elon Musk.
