The battle against COVID-19 is far from over and goes the same for false information around the Internet. Some companies are putting on the effort against this, such as WhatsApp limiting forwarded messages or Facebook showcasing legit COVID-19 news. As for Twitter, they too have a plan which is to put on warning messages.

Initially, Twitter's role in battling against false information was to remove COVID-19 tweets which could "direct risk to people's health or well-being" but starting week onwards, the company will implement labels and warning messages on posts online. This is so that the public can be provided with additional context and information about those fake COVID-19 news, as well as make it easier for them to find facts and be well informed.

According to Twitter, there will be three categories in labelling the fake news online:

  • Misleading information — statements or assertions that have been confirmed to be false or misleading by subject-matter experts, such as public health authorities.
  • Disputed claims — statements or assertions in which the accuracy, truthfulness, or credibility of the claim is contested or unknown.
  • Unverified claims — information (which could be true or false) that is unconfirmed at the time it is shared.

Of course, that's not to say it is "all in a day's work" for Twitter as they will continue to monitor and introduce new labels. It is also noted that people who are not logged in their Twitter account may not see the labels on the embedded Tweets. Well, still better than nothing.
