In preparation for its Next Gen 5G network, U Mobile has inked a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Melaka ICT Holdings Sdn Bhd (MICTH). The partnership is another step towards U Mobile’s goal of achieving 80% nationwide coverage of populated areas (CoPA) by the second half of 2026.
Strengthening 5G Infrastructure with State Support
Under the agreement, MICTH will grant U Mobile access to its tower and site infrastructure across Melaka. This will be coupled with operational support to streamline the 5G site rollout process. The collaboration aims to create an efficient deployment framework, enabling quicker and wider network expansion within the state.
Woon Ooi Yuen, U Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasised the importance of the partnership:
“With MICTH’s support, we’re making great strides toward delivering reliable 5G connectivity to both consumers and businesses in Melaka. This partnership not only aligns with our national 5G coverage goals but also contributes to Melaka’s broader digital transformation and economic growth.”
MICTH CEO, Dr. Nazdiana Ab. Wahab, echoed the sentiment:
“Our collaboration with U Mobile reinforces our commitment to advancing Melaka’s digital infrastructure. By accelerating 5G rollout, we aim to ensure seamless, inclusive connectivity that benefits the state’s people and economy.”
A Ceremony to Mark the Milestone
The MoU signing took place during the Melaka State Telecommunication Synergy and Appreciation Ceremony at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Kuala Lumpur. Key representatives at the exchange included:
- Woon Ooi Yuen, CTO of U Mobile
- Jaime Chee Kar Yean, Head of Network Programs and Rollout, U Mobile
- Dr. Nazdiana binti Abd Wahab, CEO of MICTH
- YB Datuk Fairul Nizam bin Roslan, EXCO for Science, Technology, Innovation & Digital Communication of Melaka
The ceremony was witnessed by Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh, Chief Minister of Melaka, and Dato’ Azhar bin Haji Arshad, Melaka State Secretary.
Looking Ahead
With Melaka now part of U Mobile’s expanding 5G footprint, the telco is steadily moving toward its ambitious target of 80% CoPA coverage by 2026. More than just faster speeds, this rollout positions 5G as a critical enabler of smart cities, digital businesses, and a more connected future for Malaysians.
