As U Mobile prepares to implement the second 5G network, the media got a chance to speak with Chairman Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun about the progress. Long story short, we can expect to see the rollout in the next 15 to 18 months.

During the media briefing, one of the comments he made was dismissing the analysts' comments about how U Mobile may struggle in this field. He remarked U Mobile is experienced enough, as he started Digi years ago, then eventually U Mobile and REDtone. He also wants to prove the critics wrong when the second 5G network rolls out.

In regards to potential collaboration, Vincent Tan said U Mobile is looking to partner up with Huawei and ZTE as 5G telecommunication suppliers. These two companies will be providing the required 5G equipment and financing. Nothing is finalised yet, though, except that U Mobile and CIMB had recently signed an MoU for financing support.

It was only recently that both Hong Leong Investment Bank and Kenanga Research mentioned in a note that U Mobile could struggle and face delays in the rollout. The bank's research house thinks it is “an uphill task for U Mobile considering its size and financials”, whereas the latter said U Mobile should have additional partnerships and prepare many other steps.

In other news, Vincent Tan is planning to put U Mobile listed on Bursa Malaysia by the end of this year. He is also working on its initial public offering and submit the proposal by the next few months.
