The United States Department of Commerce has officially lifted its full export restrictions on artificial intelligence (AI) chips to Malaysia, reclassifying the country under a new category that permits limited access to these advanced technologies.
Previously, Malaysia faced comprehensive limitations on importing AI chips from the U.S., impacting its technological development and AI initiatives. With the recent policy change, Malaysia can now import a capped quantity of AI chips, marking a significant shift in U.S. trade policy towards the nation.

This development is anticipated to bolster Malaysia's AI sector, facilitating growth in areas such as data centres, cloud computing, and AI-driven industries. The partial lifting of restrictions reflects the strengthening bilateral relations between Malaysia and the United States and acknowledges Malaysia's commitment to responsible technology use.
The Malaysian government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the change. However, industry experts view this move as a positive step towards enhancing Malaysia's position in the global AI landscape.
