Most people are aware that smartphone chipsets improve every year. After all, the performance of flagship phones is a selling point for brands. But did you know that our phones' storage are also improving over time? Well, JEDEC has recently announced an upgrade to the UFS standard of mobile storage.
UFS 5.0 is out
The Joint Electron Device Engineering Council Solid State Technology Association, also known as JEDEC, has announced that the next version of the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) is almost ready. For those unaware, UFS is the storage standard for mobile devices and is optimised for mobile apps. UFS 4.0 was launched in August 2022, while the current UFS 4.1 was released in January 2025.
Since UFS 4.1 is more of an update than a performance overhaul, the upcoming UFS 5.0 is highly anticipated. According to JEDEC, UFS 5.0 will deliver sequential performance of up to 10.8 GB/s, which is almost double the UFS 4.x generation's 5.8 GB/s. JEDEC also revealed that the performance jump is to meet the demands of AI applications and functions. UFS 5.0 will also maintain compatibility with UFS 4.x hardware, provide inline hashing for improved security, and more.
Launch date unconfirmed
However, JEDEC hasn't set a launch date for UFS 5.0. In addition, no smartphone manufacturers have announced new devices with UFS 5.0 storage. The first phones with the new standard may only appear next year, so we'll have to wait and see how much of an impact it can deliver. Until then, stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
