OnePlus may face the same fate as HUAWEI and ZTE in the US after two lawmakers in the country have asked the US Commerce Department to investigate the tech firm due to security concerns. The duo claimed that OnePlus devices may have collected and transmitted extensive user data, including sensitive personal information, to China.

US lawmakers want the country's Commerce Department to investigate OnePlus

According to Reuters, the lawmakers, Representative John Moolenaar, a Republican who chairs a House of Representatives committee on China, and the panel's top Democrat, Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, said that major US retailers sell OnePlus devices for use on two US wireless networks. Moreover, a recent analysis by a commercial company revealed that OnePlus devices may have transmitted sensitive personal information to servers under Chinese jurisdiction without explicit user consent.

The two lawmakers have since asked the US Commerce Department to investigate OnePlus devices via its Information and Communications Technology and Services programme. The investigation includes determining the user data types collected by OnePlus devices without user consent, such as “sensitive personal information and screenshots”.
