Move aside USB 3.1, a new speedster is coming to town and its name is USB 3.2. The recently announced USB 3.2 will be able to offer up to 20Gbps in transfer speeds, which is up to double what the USB 3.1 can do and up to four times faster than the common USB 3.0.

The new USB 3.2 will be used exclusively with USB-C cables as the usual connectors does not have enough wires to carry that much data.

However, not all USB-C cables are able to support USB 3.2 – only the USB-C with USB 3.1 Gen 2 compatible cables will be able to support the sheer speed of USB 3.2. Other than that, the new version requires new devices and slightly updated hosts to work so we will probably see it mostly implemented in the newer devices. It will also be backwards compatible but at the slower speeds.

Sounds great right? The official formal release will be in September where we will see some confirmed specs of the new USB, it’s still mostly in the final draft stage. However, we will probably still have to wait until 2019 before we actually see it physically.
