Today, the USB Promoter Group announced a newly updated specification for the USB4 Version 2.0. It's currently in development and when ready, the technology is capable of transferring speeds twice as fast as the current USB4 of up to 80Gbps.

Thanks to a new physical layer architecture, the existing 40Gbps USB C passive cables are now combined with the newly-defined 80 Gbps USB C active cables. It can also now allow USB 3.2 data tunnelling to exceed 20Gb/s as well as support the latest DisplayPort and PCIe versions. Moreover, it is also backward compatible with USB4 Version 1.0, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.

According to the USB Promoter Group, the update will be published ahead of the USB DevDays developer event in November. The USB Promoter Group comprises of a few well-known brands, such as Apple, Intel, Microsoft, HP, STM and many others.

We expect to see more USB4 Version 2.0 in the future, particularly in 2023 with new smartphones, tablets, laptops and other devices. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
