Recently, the nation was shocked by a baby elephant’s death. To overcome this problem, the UTP (Universiti Teknologi Petronas) team has introduced a solution. So, what should you know about it?

A safer solution for elephants

For your information, researchers from the Smart Infrastructure Modelling and Monitoring Centre (SIMM) under the Institute for Smart and Sustainable Living (ISSL) of Universiti Teknologi Petronas, in collaboration with the Forestry Department, developed the ELEFence fence to prevent this tragic incident from happening again.

Additionally, studies have found that elephants are intelligent animals. They can use tree trunks to knock down ordinary fences that are installed to prevent their movement and encroachment into human settlements.

How reliable is it?

Alternatively, solutions such as electric fences in Kenya and Indonesia injure elephants and can cause avoidable death. Thanks to the pilot project at the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre in 2021, the 35-metre-long ELEFence installed passed all tests carried out.

Due to the durable design of the ELEFence, even if an elephant dropped a tree trunk on it, it does not collapse, and more importantly, this fence can also prevent the movement of baby elephants.

With the success of real-world testing, the 7km-long ELEFence will be installed along several sections of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) Project near Kemasul Forest Reserve, Pahang.

Currently, it is in the design phase for installation at elephant conservation centres located in Johor and Perak.
