Google Senior Vice President (VP) Prabhakar Raghavan has revealed that TikTok and Instagram are becoming competitors to its core services, Search and Maps. During a discussion about the evolution of search, Prabhakar revealed that younger users are now turning to TikTok and Instagram instead of Google services for discovery purposes.

The Google Senior VP who runs the company’s Knowledge and Information organisation further asserted that almost 40 percent of young people don’t use Google Maps or Search to find a place for lunch. Instead, based on Google’s studies, they go to TikTok or Instagram.

As reported by TechCrunch, Google clarified that the 40 percent figure is based on internal research that involved a survey of US users aged 18 to 24. Raghavan further elaborated that new internet users have a completely different mindset than the ones we are accustomed to, with the queries that they ask also being distinct.

The Google Senior VP also asserted that younger people are generally more interested in ‘visually rich forms’ of search and discovery. Hence, Google is faced with the challenge of conjuring up completely new expectations to keep their core businesses afloat.
