Users can now back up RAW images to Google Photos

Google Photos, the company’s photo backup and sharing platform is introducing a new feature to the app. Already rolling out to select users, the service now allows you to back up RAW images instead of just the usual image formats.

As reported by 9to5Google, some users have received a notification from the app announcing that RAW photos will not only be backed up but also appear in the Photos view of the app. The images will have a “RAW” badge on the top-right corner and opening them will also prompt a switcher at the bottom that lets you also view the JPEG of the image.

Of course, given that RAW photos are much bigger than JPEG or PNG, do expect your Google One storage to be affected by backing up RAW photos. There’s also no obvious way to restrict RAW photos being uploaded as of right now, so do take note.
