PC handheld gaming consoles with the likes of the ROG Ally series, Lenovo Legion Go and others are a great idea for gamers who want a portable PC gaming device. However, Windows 11 optimisation leaves a lot to be desired. And thankfully, Valve is going to save it with SteamOS.
Before the confirmation by Valve, the company released its latest SteamOS notes saying “Added support for extra ROG Ally keys". There was no official announcement at the time so the media decided to ask Valve personally about this. True enough, a Valve spokesman replied "The note about ROG Ally keys is related to third-party device support for SteamOS. The team is continuing to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS".
That being said, SteamOS won't be coming to other PC handheld gaming consoles so soon. The ROG Ally series seems to be one of the firsts and Valve said the development is "making steady progress". We also don't expect the ROG Ally series to come pre-installed with SteamOS out of the box, as we would need to download and install it ourselves.
Speaking of SteamOS on the ROG Ally series, that also means we can potentially switch back and forth between the two operating systems, even with the Steam Deck. According to sources, Valve did promise on that and here's the update:
"As for Windows, we’re preparing to make the remaining Windows drivers for Steam Deck OLED available (you might have seen that we are prepping firmware for the Bluetooth driver). There’s no update on the timing for dual boot support—it’s still a priority, but we haven’t been able to get to it just yet,"
We can't wait when SteamOS becomes available for the ROG Ally series. Until then, we have to sit tight for the update in the future.
