Soon after Elon Musk took over Twitter, reports said that those with a verified account would have to pay a monthly fee. The figure wasn't finalized yet but it's official now, $8 (~RM37) per month will be charged to Twitter users.

For those who don't use Twitter, the blue tick signifies a verified account belonging to a well-known public figure(s), brands, outlets and others. While forcing official accounts to pay seems counterintuitive that would make it harder for people to identify reliable sources. Musk even went on to criticize the current Twitter as a "lords & peasants system".

At the same time, there are also benefits to introducing a monthly fee. Twitter hasn't been earning profit for years, as well as Musk wants to reduce Twitter's reliance on advertising. According to Musk, he also added:

  • Price adjusted by country proportionate to purchasing power parity
  • Priority in replies, mentions & searches, which is essential to defeating spam/scam
  • Ability to post long video & audio
  • Half as many ads
  • Paywall bypass for publishers willing to work with us
  • Give Twitter a revenue stream to reward content creators
  • There will be a secondary tag below the name for someone who is a public figure, which is already the case for politicians

Speaking of advertising, several major brands have temporarily paused their ads on Twitter just to see the new policies and changes by Musk. But what do you think? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
