Nowadays, there's a wide breadth of entertainment on our mobile devices. We can watch videos, read web novels, browse social media, and play surprisingly high-quality video games. An example of this is Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), which is rather popular in Malaysia. If you're new to the game, here are some details to get you started.
MLBB - A short intro for gamers
Since you're here, you've probably at least heard of Mobile Legends. First released in 2016, MLBB is a 5v5 Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game. It's the equivalent of Dota 2 and League of Legends for PC gamers, except it's played with touch controls on mobile devices. Some would say it's a more casual type of MOBA.
Like those games, MLBB lets you play as a "Hero" to contest over three lanes and defeat enemy units or infrastructure in the way. There are also 'jungle' areas with neutral enemies that both teams can eliminate for resources. Anyway, the winning condition is to destroy the opponent team's base.
Sounds simple, right? Well, no. Anyone who has played MOBA games will tell you that these games have a lot of depth in strategy, with the combination of Heroes used greatly affecting matches. No two heroes are the same; heroes come with two active skills, one passive skill and one ultimate. They're typically categorised by their role, such as Tank, Marksman, Assassin, Fighter, Mage, and Support.
MLBB Heroes 101
What heroes do you get to play in MLBB? A few notable ones are Hayabusa, Lukas, Zhuxin, Chip, and Layla. The game also recently introduced Zetian, a new hero inspired by China's only female emperor Wu Zetian. Using her as an example, Zetian has the following abilities:
- Passive - Celestial Armament
- Skill 1 - Phoenix Strike
- Skill 2 - Phoenix Descent
- Ultimate - Fury of the Phoenix
Celestial Armament consists of two parts - Phoenix Crown and Celestial Robe. The first adds an additional effect to the two skills, while the second stuns approaching enemies periodically. Next, Skill 1 fires straight magic waves in a targeted direction, dealing magic damage to enemies it hits. There's even a slight knockback on the last wave to reposition the enemy Hero. Skill 2 drops a circular magic blast that slows enemies instead. Finally, the ultimate is a global spell that buffs allies while damaging and stunning enemies.
Based on the Hero's description, you can see that Zetian was designed to help win team fights. Also, the global ultimate allows this Hero to apply pressure on the opposing team, even if you're not near them. Zetian offers a balance of damage, control and team utility, making her a versatile pick for people looking to start playing MLBB. Mind you, playing her will require some skill to properly use.
