Earlier today, WhatsApp launched its latest feature in Malaysia. Known as WhatsApp Channels, this feature is great for getting important updates from people and organisationsThe best part? This feature will be in a new “Updates” tab, away from your private chats.

In addition, WhatsApp Channels allows you to preserve your privacy online. For instance, if you are an admin for a channel, your number will not be exposed to other admins or followers. Likewise, following a channel won’t reveal your phone number to the admin or other followers.

Interestingly, A channel admin cannot add their followers to their channel. This is great for eliminating spam messages or avoiding being added by strangers into a random group. Long-time WhatsApp or Telegram users would understand.

Moreover, WhatsApp Channel functions as a one-way broadcast tool. This allows better communication from the source and prevents misinformation from unknown parties. Admins can also share photos, videos, stickers and polls on the channel. Plus, the channel history will only be available for 30 days. So you don’t have to delete messages to free up space on your phone.

Previously, several Malaysia-based partners enjoyed early access to WhatsApp Channels. These partners include Mental Illness Awareness & Support Association (MIASA), Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Puan Anita binti Abu Bakar, President and Founder of MIASA says:

“WhatsApp Channels will help us achieve better reach in a world flooded with information. We can educate the public about mental health and keep followers updated on awareness and support those who are struggling.

It will also improve our existing communications on WhatsApp, which we often use to coordinate between volunteers, members and staff. The chronological thread means that audiences will not miss our updates at any point.”
