Meta's three social media platforms, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, have now been officially blocked in Russia. That said, what should you know about it?

The Russian gov is planning to move all users to the Max app

For your information, all three services have been removed from the directory of Roskomnadzor, which oversees internet services in the country. No reason was given, but the Russian government is working to move all users of external services to the Max app, which is a WeChat-like app for residents.

Additionally, Facebook and Instagram are now only accessible in Russia via VPN. WhatsApp has confirmed that they were blocked by Russian authorities and is working to restore service immediately. In addition to the three Meta apps, access to YouTube has also been reported to be affected since today.

Moreover, Russia is in the process of banning social media and foreign communication applications that are alleged to pose security risks, are used for terrorist purposes and spread foreign agendas.
